5 tips for shooting with a drone

Do you want to take pictures with your drone at a cool location? Then first read these 10 handy tips for shooting with a drone. This way you are well prepared and you come home with the most beautiful drone photos!

Tip 1: Photography in RAW

By photographing in RAW instead of JPEG, you have much more options during editing. A RAW file contains much more information about the image, for example about the highlights and shadows. If the photos are slightly over or underexposed, it is easier to retrieve the details in the post-processing than with a JPG file.

Tip 2: Make a good composition

Sharpness is important, but the composition adds a lot to a photo and it determines how someone looks through the image. A central composition emphasizes what is in the middle. The third-party rule can also help you enormously when photographing with a drone. Consider the lines in the landscape and think about what you want to emphasize - and what you want to have in your image.

Tip 3: Select a low ISO value

A drone has a relatively small image sensor that is made up of very many pixels. The more pixels a sensor has, the less light a single pixel can capture and the faster noise is generated. Therefore, set a low ISO value to limit the occurrence of noise. Your photos will then be much 'cleaner' in appearance.

Tip 4: Photograph in the golden hour

The best time to take photos is during the well-known 'golden hour'. Just before dawn and in the evening just before sunset the light is warm in tone and you can make beautiful drone images. The sunlight and the long shadows create a nice atmosphere in your photos.

Tip 5: Use filters

Filters also exist for drones. A gray filter has no influence on the colors of your photos, but it does affect how much light penetrates the sensor of your drone. With a gray filter you have much more control over the shutter speed that you set, this is useful when photographing snow or white beaches. With a polarizing filter you reduce glare from, for example, water and the total contrast and color saturation of blue tones are somewhat increased .
